ONLINE ONLY AUCTION - DEALER GROUP SUCCESS STORY

News notes from Auctioneer Brad Olstad

With the recent completion of a large dealership online only auction, I can tell you the frontier is changing to accommodate the demands of the buying public!

The Kibble Group, one of Central Minnesota's premier dealerships, engaged with Steffes Auctioneers to market some used inventory using our online only platform IQBID.COM. Their success rate was 100% SOLD! This was a very satisfying result for the seller as well as the buyers who were able to make purchases from the convenience of their home or business.

I have been an auctioneer for 32 years and I still believe that the power of the auctioneer and the live location auction process will always be a strong and steady for farmers, dealers, businesses and real estate. With that said however, enter into the NEW arena of Online Only Auctions. Here is an opportunity that gives proactive dealership groups such as Kibble the option of having an Online Auction that keeps the equipment at one location plus creates activity for the store, and that leads to other retail sales! A perfect combination!

Implement dealers are in a very competitive market with thin margins, so inventory management and market indicators are key elements to decision makers in their organization. The auction method of marketing is a leading indicator of market trends and using both live events and online only events sales information gives vital statistics to the upper management of dealer groups. The success of the Kibble Event provides key evidence that with positive and proactive approaches to selling used inventory, dealers can keep on top of used inventory and still keep their dealerships active.

These are the fundamental processes that lead to the success of this dealer group online only auction event.

  • A strong commitment to the auction process
  • The quality of the equipment offered
  • Direct involvement of dealer group with the auctioneer in charge
  • Communication of market weakness and strengths
  • Having a designated person in charge on the dealer side and keeping communication open with salespeople, auctioneer, and the buying public
As an auctioneer I believe the relationships you establish whether you are a buyer or seller is the first step in the success of any marketing project. The Kibble Group gives credibility to this belief. We have a very satisfied Seller and many satisfied Buyers.

Yes! The frontier is changing in used equipment sales. Online Only auctions are a function of the market - not the only way but an excellent alternative! The choice is up to you! Steffes Auctioneers is here to help you make those decisions - A trusted leader in the auction industry since 1960!

First Auction of the Season Shows Strong Prices and Demand

Scott Steffes Reports on First Farm Retirement Auction of the Season
Dan Hovde retirement auction shows strong prices and demand.

Why? It is Simple Economics...

I think I got a C in Economics in college. Either I must have been paying attention that day or got the question right on a test but I know when supply goes down demand goes up. Brilliant of me don't you think? That is exactly what is happening in the used farm machinery market in the spring of 2011. The Dan Hovde auction shows example after example of that with the prices achieved on the major farm pieces. Did the buyer's pay too much for their items? I don't think so. You see machinery is a tool designed to do a job and when you can buy something to do a job for less than what it costs new that's usually smart business. Prices for new machinery continue to go up and up. A perfect example of that is Dan's 2004 Degelman Rock Roller. It sold for substantially more ($31,500) than Dan paid for it new in 2004 and I mean quite a bit. How can that be a good buy? I suggest it is because it is a piece that had zero functional obsolescence (new ones are nearly identical), it was in near new condition with low acres and the rocks really don't care do they? So the buyer saved a couple of thousand dollars maybe, did not have to pay the sales tax for a new one and kept that extra savings in his pocket. It makes sense to me.

The same goes for the JD 8300 tractor selling at $81,000. That tractor is probably 10-15 thousand higher than you could have bought it for 2 or 3 years ago. How many price increases have we seen from John Deere in the last 3 years and what is the "replacement cost" of a 200 horsepower MFD tractor today? When you consider that, Dan's 8300 sold for less than half of new and it was in excellent condition, had good tires and relatively low hours. If you look forward, it makes more sense, doesn't it? Use the same reasoning with his gas tandem truck line. We saw some good prices there as well and truly no weakness, anywhere in the markets.

I can tell you the prosperity of the farm communities will continue as long as commodity values hold, we have stable interest rates, and we get any kind of production. The supply of used farm machinery, at least for this spring, will continue to be thin as there just isn't much auction activity. We have several farm retirement auction yet to do plus our AgIron Events, and used continues to make sense if you can find a piece that fits your needs. The risk factor is far less when it comes to holding its value. If you don't believe me, just ask Dan Hovde how he did on the equipment he sold!

Bid high would you please?
